I must admit I am one of the lucky ones who have had the opportunity to participate in exhibitions and art fairs worldwide. Behind the success of these events, a crucial role makes everything possible, from start to finish. That is the Art Festival Curator. Many people unfamiliar with the art scene may not know of it.

Recently, I had the privilege to talk to Top Changtrakul, the art festival curator of the Mango Art Festival in Bangkok.

Q1. Tell us about yourself and your background: who you are and what you do.

My name is Top Changtrakul. I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree, majoring in New Genres, specializing in VDO art and performance, from San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). I then went to NYC, struggled as an artist, so decided to return to Bangkok in 2002. In 2013, I founded the Hotel Art Fair Bangkok and was a curator until 2019. With the new group of people, we are organizing the Mango Art Festival, which combines art, design and performance.

ผมชื่อ ท็อป จ่างตระกูล สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโท ด้านวิจิตรศิลป์ (MFA) สาขา แนวใหม่ (New Genres) à¸‹à¸¶à¹ˆà¸‡à¹€à¸Šà¸µà¹ˆà¸¢à¸§à¸Šà¸²à¸à¸”้านวิดีโออาร์ตและการแสดงจาก สถาบันศิลปะซานฟรานซิสโก (SFAI) จากนั้นผมก็ไปนิวยอร์ค ดิ้นรนในฐานะศิลปิน จนปี 2545 เลยตัดสินใจกลับกรุงเทพฯ ในปี 2556 ผมก่อตั้ง Hotel Art Fair Bangkok และเป็นภัณฑารักษ์จนถึงปี 2562 ตอนนี้กับทีมงานใหม่เรากำลังจัดงาน เทศกาลศิลปะมะม่วง (Mango Art Festival) เทศกาลที่ผสมผสานศิลปะ การออกแบบ และการแสดง

Q2. How would you describe what you do? What does your work entail?

I am an artist and curator for the Mango Art Festival. At the Mango Art Festival, I help my team select artists and use my connections to bring in overseas galleries and fresh talents, so they can gain exposure in Thailand.

ผมเป็นศิลปินและภัณฑารักษ์ของ Mango Art Festival ที่งาน Mango Art Festival ผมช่วยทีมของผมเลือกศิลปิน และใช้ความสัมพันธ์ของผมในการนำแกลเลอรีจากต่างประเทศและศิลปินที่มีพรสวรรค์ใหม่ ๆ เข้ามา เพื่อให้พวกเขาได้รับความสนใจในประเทศไทย

Q3. How did you get started?

After organizing Hotel Art Fair Bangkok for many years, I realized the gallery scene in Thailand is small for many reasons, including the economy, government support, and private sponsorship. To push the creative scene forward, we must think differently and involve other talents, hence the introduction of the Mango Art Festival. This is a festival unlike any other because it unites all creative professions in Thailand in one place. You could visit art galleries and check out design items while enjoying the performances. I want to make art easy and enjoyable for everyone.

Q3. อะไรคือจุดเริ่มต้นของคุณ?

หลังจากจัดงาน Hotelhotel  Art Fair Bangkok มาหลายปี ผมก็พบว่า แกลเลอรีในประเทศไทยยังเล็ก ด้วยเหตุผลหลายประการ ทั้งด้านเศรษฐกิจ การสนับสนุนจากรัฐบาล และการสนับสนุนของภาคเอกชน เพื่อผลักดันงานสร้างสรรค์ เราต้องคิดต่างและดึงคนที่มีพรสวรรค์อื่น ๆ เข้ามา จึงนำมาซึ่ง Mango Art Festival เทศกาลนี้ไม่เหมือนเทศกาลอื่น ๆ เพราะ เป็นการรวมเอาทุกอาชีพในงานสร้างสรรค์ของไทยไว้ในที่เดียว คุณสามารถเยี่ยมชมหอศิลป์และชมผลงานการออกแบบ ในขณะที่เพลิดเพลินไปกับการแสดง ผมต้องการให้งานศิลปะเป็นเรื่องง่ายและสนุกสำหรับทุกคน

Q4. What is challenging and rewarding about what you do?

The challenge for any festival is the budget, and Mango Art Festival is no different. We have to use our budget wisely while maintaining high standards. A reward for me is ensuring high sales for galleries, artists and designers. However, my most rewarding outcome is letting the world know that Thailand's creative talents are second to none.

Q4. อะไรคือสิ่งที่คุณทำที่มีความท้าทายและมีคุณค่า

ความท้าทายสำหรับทุกเทศกาลก็คืองบประมาณ และ Mango Art Festival ก็ไม่ต่างกัน เราต้องใช้งบประมาณอย่างชาญฉลาด ในขณะที่ต้องรักษามาตรฐานไว้ สำหรับผม รางวัลก็คือ การทำให้แกลเลอรี ศิลปิน และนักออกแบบมียอดขายสูง ๆ อย่างไรก็ตาม ผลลัพธ์ที่มีคุณค่าที่สุดของผม คือ การทำให้โลกรู้ว่าพรสวรรค์ในการสร้างสรรค์ของประเทศไทยไม่เป็นสองรองใคร

Q5. What can we expect from you in the future? (What can we expect next from you?)

My suggestion would be to listen to Steve Job's Stanford Commencement Address often, preferably daily, before you go to work.

Q5. คุณมีข้อเสนอแนะอะไรให้กับคนที่สนใจในงานของคุณไหม?

คำแนะนำของผม คือ ฟังสุนทรพจน์ของสตีฟ จ๊อบส์ ในงานรับปริญญาของมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ดบ่อย ๆ ทุกวันยิ่งดี ก่อนไปทำงาน

Q6. What can we expect from you in the near future?

At the moment, we are planning for the Mango Art Festival 2022. My team and I are working hard to outdo what we did at LHONG1919.
